makerbot industries | robots that make things!

Pretty cool news for people who design things! Make your own prototypes with your own robot – meet the desktop 3D printer made in New York: MakerBot Industries was founded in 2009 by Bre Pettis, Adam Mayer, and Zach Smith to democratize manufacturing.

The MakerBot Replicator™ is a personal 3D printer with MakerBot Dualstrusion™ (2-color printing) and a bigger printing footprint it allows for printing BIG! Assembled in Brooklyn by skilled technicians, the MakerBot Replicator™ is ready to start printing right out of the box.  It’s affordable (USD1,749 at time of publishing), open source, and sits on your desktop.    With a build envelope that’s roughly the size of a loaf of bread you can make an entire chess set with the press of a button.

They also have an active online community at Thingiverse.com where users can post digital design files, document their designs, and collaborate on open source hardware.
